- Tailor Your CV And Make Each Point Count
We’ve all been there. Firing off CVs left right and centre then patting ourselves on the back for applying for 20 jobs within an hour. But how many replies do you get? Think quality not quantity! Applying for the same type of role in 3 different companies does not make it a good idea to shoot your untouched CV off without thought. Depending on the company, the job spec will vary so read the job spec thoroughly and after each point, make a note of your corresponding skills and experience. These notes can be used to construct a very concise cover letter which will make you shine as an eligible candidate. The same points can also be used to tailor your CV in order to optimise your chances of getting chosen for interview. Put yourself in the shoes of the employer or recruiter; is your CV easy to read? Do the key skills and experience being sought come to your attention quickly? Is there unnecessary jargon diluting valuable points? Scrap it. Also be aware that silly errors like spelling mistakes can come across as lazy and unprofessional so have someone proof read before sending. It can make the difference between a dismissed CV and the chosen one.
- Always Seek Feedback After Interview
The value of an interview where the outcome does not go your way lies in the feedback you seek afterwards. In fact, even if you do get the job, it is still worth getting feedback on what you could have improved on. “Many times what we perceive as an error or failure is actually a gift. And eventually we find that lessons learned from that discouraging experience prove to be of great worth.”- Richelle E. Goodrich. As in all aspects of life, learning from mistakes is a catalyst in aiding learning and growth so don’t be afraid to ask for feedback and take it on board when moving forward to the next interview.
- Know The Company
Doing your research on the company should be at the top of your list when prepping for an interview. If you do nothing more, make a list of 10 facts about the company. The handy thing about having these quick pointers to hand is that you will be able to engage a lot more when the employer speaks about the company. When asked what you know about the company, these facts will make a great impression. This kind of preparation conveys your enthusiasm and demonstrates that you are an organised individual. Be sure to also ask about any aspect of the company or role that you would like to know more about, further showing your interest and enthusiasm.
- Operation Social Profile Spring Clean
You might look like the life and soul of the party knocking back those 3 shots in that hilarious Facebook video but it’s not likely to be something a prospective employer will respect you for. If it’s public, there’s a strong chance that an employer will check out your social network account. If there is anything questionable in the public domain, take it down. It could be the reason you don’t get the job. Remove any pictures, videos or comments that you would not want a prospective employer to see.
